In 2008, the Reid family, in conjunction with the Elphinstone Institute, launched the Toulmin Prize to honour the achivement of David Toulmin (John Reid) and to encourage the writing of fiction with a North-East focus. Over the years, hundreds of 'amateur' writers have entered the annual competition. A selection of these stories is presented here. Like Toulmin's stories, they are funny, tragic, nostalgic, whimsical, moving. They exemplify the diversity of the mither tongue and testify that the difficult art of the short story is alive and well in the North-East of Scotland.
