Summer School: International Intellectual Property and Information Law (2-Week Course)

Description

Dates & Location: 2 June – 13 June (Monday – Friday, 09:30 – 17:00) | University of Aberdeen Campus

Course Overview

This summer, embark on an enriching journey at the University of Aberdeen’s two-week Summer School in International Intellectual Property and Information Law (IIPIL). This course is ideal for students, professionals in law, business, politics, marketing, or international relations, as well as those engaged in research, development funding, entrepreneurship, industry, policy-making, regulation, and public engagement.

In Week 1, you will gain a foundational understanding of key aspects of IIPIL, with an emphasis on professional communication, especially in the context of emerging disputes. Week 2 builds on this knowledge, continuing the case scenario from Week 1 while introducing new material, expert guests and instructions that deepen your understanding and practical skills.

Course Content

Week 1:
Each day will involve meetings with a hypothetical client, where you’ll navigate a case scenario from three main strands: litigation, commercial, and activist perspectives. Throughout the week, expert legal professionals will share insights from their experience in IPIL, and how they would approach such evolving cases.

Week 2:
As the scenario progresses, you will dive deeper into the legal, practical, and professional aspects of the case, with additional material and instructions provided. Participants will be tasked with presenting as part of a group to different audiences, such as a court, a funder, or a protest crowd. The course will focus on UK developments but will also provide a transnational perspective, equipping you with global skills for careers in litigation, commercial law, or activism. This course aims to reflect international context and realities of intellectual property and information law.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of key aspects of International Intellectual Property and Information Law.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of litigation processes, from both commercial and activist viewpoints.
  • Refine your ability to present clearly and confidently to a small audience.
  • Strengthen your interpersonal and teamwork skills through active participation in group exercises.
  • Enhance your expertise in addressing practical challenges in managing, monetising, challenging, and advocating for intellectual property and information rights.
  • Develop the skills to analyse conflicts and synergies between different legal and activist perspectives across the IPIL landscape.
  • Build expertise in drafting and negotiating key legal documents within litigation, commercial, and activist scenarios.
  • Strengthen your communication skills (both written and oral) and your ability to work effectively within teams to address unexpected developments.
